Coppélia Ballet
This is the story of a silly young man named Franz who falls in love with a doll named Coppélia. He sees her sitting in the window of Dr. Coppélius’ toyshop. Swanhilda, his fiance? becomes jealous when she realizes that Franz has been smitten by Coppelia’s beauty. The Burgomaster arrives and gives Swanhilda a sheaf of wheat. According to an old custom if the wheat makes a sound the love of Swanilda and Franz is true. But Swanhilda hears nothing and declares that Franz and her are no longer engaged.
Swanhilda finds a key to Dr. Coppelius’ toyshop and creeps in with her friends. She finds Coppélia in a closet and discovers that she is only a doll. Suddenly Dr. Coppélius returns home. As her friends run away, Swanhilda quickly dons Coppélia’s clothes. Then Franz appears at the window looking to meet Coppélia. Dr. Coppélius induces Franz to drink a drugged potion. He believes that by stealing Franz’ soul and giving it to Coppélia the doll will come alive. As Franz lies drugged on the table. Dr. Coppélius chants magic incantations. Suddenly the doll leaps into the air and begins to dance and destroy the doctor’s workroom. He thinks that Coppélia has come alive when in reality it is Swanhilda in Coppélia’s clothes. Swanhilda takes Franz and runs away. Franz realizes his foolishness and they are married in the Harvest celebration and live happily ever after
